I look to the hills! Where will I find help? It will come from the LORD who created the heavens and the earth.
Psalm 121:1-2 (CEV ) |
| His brother Paulo was there . . . and then . . . it was kind of hazy . . . but yes, he remembered now . . . it was at church, and people were sitting in a circle. They were all listening to something. Then, with tears rolling down his face, his brother stood up and prayed for Jesus to come into his heart . . . What a great dream! It had felt so good! Alex wished it had been real. Eyes still closed, he prayed for his brother. Paulo had joined a gang, and Alex could only watch as the life was sucked out of his little brother.
Believing in hope
A couple of weeks later at church, Alex heard about a 'listening group' that was going to start on Wednesday nights. They were going to meet, listen to a Bible recording, and talk about what they had heard. When Wednesday came, Alex, hesitantly, "believing in hope," asked Paulo if he would go with him to the listening group. To his shock, Paulo said yes. It didn't seem real to Alex as they walked to the church, he couldn't believe Paulo was going with him. He prayed silently, half fearing that Paulo would change his mind and turn around.
Receiving Jesus in his heartWhen they got to the little church at least 20 other people were already there. As the listening began, Alex realised how like his dream this was. The group listened to the first couple of chapters in Matthew, then everyone began speaking over each other because they all wanted to talk about what they had heard. As they talked about God's Word, the pure Word, the powerful Word, Paulo became more and more aware of his need for God. When the leader asked if there was anyone there who didn't know Jesus personally, Paulo stood and prayed to receive Jesus in his heart - just like in Alex's dream. Now Alex and Paulo regularly attend the listening group on Wednesday nights and are planning to do so for quite a while. |
Most of us have someone we're worried about. Maybe like Alex it's your brother... maybe a friend or parent.
It's a terrible burden to carry worry around all the time.
Alex realised that he wasn't able to change things for his brother Paulo, no matter how much he loved him, and no matter what he said. He learnt to pray, and trusted God to answer.
The person who wrote this Psalm asked a question... 'Where will I find help?' Right away he answered his own question. What did he say?
Look at the whole Psalm - there are only 8 verses. It talks about how God is our protector. How does that make you feel? What do you think it really means?

Here's a great thought to read about hands... click the link below to see that 'It depends whose hands it's in!'
