TRANSPORT FOR LIBERIA

In January 2008 we shared with our Word at Work readers the plight of the Bible Society of Liberia in West Africa.

Their civil war had finally ended but now that there was an opportunity to reach rural areas of the country with Bibles, their aging pick-up van was not up to the task of tackling the rudimentary roads.

Their Executive Secretary, Elder Daniel C. Forkpah asked the Bible Society in Northern Ireland if we could help, but our funds were already fully budgeted for 2008. Mention of this was made in the magazine and as a result seven supporters came forward with very generous gifts to enable us to pledge sufficient to cover not only the purchase of a new Toyota van, but also to cover its maintenance over the next three years.

Everyone connected with both Societies was delighted with the response. Daniel has written to us:

"Greetings from Liberia!
 The Bible Society of Northern Ireland has been very generous by seeking donors to support the purchase of the Bible Society in Liberia Distribution Vehicle to enhance its distribution program in an effort to get Scriptures to the needed in rural Liberia".

Daniel and his colleagues had to wait many months before the new pick-up could be delivered. But now it is there and we were able to send a copy of the attached photograph of Daniel and the shiny new vehicle to each of the donors who provided the finance to make this possible.

Please pray:

  • for safety for those who drive it;

  • for success in reaching areas of the country that have been untouched by Scripture during the last 15 years of war;
  • for the Bible to have the maximum impact on the lives of those who receive a copy;
  • for the continuing ministry of Daniel Forkpah and his staff.
